Isopropyl alcohol (IPA, isopropanol, CAS 67-63-0) is one of the most widely used solvents and disinfectants — valued for fast evaporation, low residue and broad solvency. This guide covers its uses, grades and applications.
What is isopropyl alcohol?
IPA is a clear, colourless alcohol that is fully miscible with water and dissolves a wide range of oils, resins and compounds. It evaporates quickly and leaves little residue, making it ideal for cleaning and as a process solvent.
Common uses
- Cleaning & disinfection — surface and electronics cleaning; a base for disinfectants and sanitisers.
- Solvent — for coatings, inks, adhesives and extractions.
- Laboratory — rinsing, drying and as a reaction/processing solvent.
- Pharmaceutical & cosmetic — USP grade for formulation.
Grades and concentration
IPA is supplied in technical, reagent and USP/pharmaceutical grades, and at various concentrations (e.g. 70% for disinfection, 99%+ for electronics and synthesis). Match grade and strength to your use; request a COA for the specification.
Safe handling
IPA is flammable. Store cool, away from ignition sources and oxidisers, in closed containers, and use with ventilation. An SDS is available on request.
