Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as caustic soda or lye, is one of the most important industrial chemicals — a strong alkali used everywhere from manufacturing to water treatment. This guide covers its properties, grades and main applications.
What is sodium hydroxide?
Sodium hydroxide is a white solid alkali (supplied as beads, flakes or pearls) that is highly soluble in water, releasing heat as it dissolves to form a strongly basic solution. It is highly versatile and reacts readily with acids, fats and many organic compounds.
Common uses of caustic soda
- Manufacturing — production of soaps, detergents, paper and textiles.
- pH control & water treatment — neutralising acids and adjusting pH.
- Cleaning — heavy-duty degreasers and drain cleaners.
- Food processing — food-grade NaOH is used in processes such as curing and washing (e.g. olives, pretzels).
- Chemical synthesis — a reagent and base in countless reactions.
Grades and forms
Sodium hydroxide is available in technical, reagent and food grades, and in bead, flake or pearl form. Food grade (meeting FCC specifications) is required for food-contact applications, while technical grade suits industrial processes.
Safe handling
NaOH is corrosive and causes severe burns. Always wear appropriate PPE (gloves and eye protection), add caustic to water (never the reverse) to control the exothermic reaction, and store in a dry, sealed container away from acids and moisture. An SDS is provided on request.
