Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) is often called the most important industrial chemical — produced in greater volume than any other. This guide covers its uses, grades and safe handling.
Why sulfuric acid is everywhere
Sulfuric acid is a strong, dense, highly versatile mineral acid and a powerful dehydrating agent. Its low cost and reactivity make it central to a huge range of industrial processes.
Common uses
- Fertiliser production — the largest single use (e.g. phosphate fertilisers).
- Metal processing — pickling and cleaning of steel and other metals.
- Chemical manufacturing — a reagent and catalyst in countless syntheses.
- Refining & processing — petroleum refining, water treatment and pH control.
Grades and concentration
Sulfuric acid is supplied in technical grade for industry and ACS/reagent grade for analytical work, at concentrations such as 95–98%. Match grade and concentration to your application; request a COA. See our overview of industrial acids.
Safe handling
Concentrated sulfuric acid is highly corrosive and reacts violently with water, generating heat. Always add acid to water slowly (never water to acid), wear full PPE, and store away from bases and metals. An SDS is provided on request.
