How to Store Chemicals Safely: A Practical Guide

Proper chemical storage protects people, property and the chemicals themselves. This practical guide covers the essentials of storing chemicals safely in the lab or workplace.

1. Separate incompatible chemicals

Never store incompatible chemicals together. Keep acids away from bases, oxidisers away from flammables and reducing agents, and water-reactive substances away from moisture. Use the SDS to identify incompatibilities.

2. Control the environment

Store chemicals in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and ignition sources. Some products (e.g. concentrated hydrogen peroxide) need vented containers; others must be kept dry (e.g. sodium hydroxide, hydrides).

3. Use proper containers and labelling

Keep chemicals in their original, correctly labelled containers with caps tightly closed. Do not decant into unlabelled bottles, and inspect containers regularly for damage or leaks.

4. Provide secondary containment

Use trays or bunds to contain spills, especially for corrosives and liquids, and keep spill kits and PPE accessible.

5. Always follow the SDS

The Safety Data Sheet for each product gives specific storage requirements, incompatibilities and handling precautions. It is your single best reference.
