Acids are among the most heavily used chemicals in industry — essential for processing, manufacturing and treatment. This guide covers the main industrial acids, their applications and how to handle them safely.
The major industrial acids
- Hydrochloric acid — metal pickling and cleaning, pH control, and chemical synthesis.
- Sulfuric acid — the most-produced industrial chemical; used in fertilisers, processing, refining and as a dehydrating agent.
- Nitric acid — fertiliser and nitrate production, metal etching and nitration reactions.
- Organic acids — such as salicylic, acetic and butyric acid, used in pharma, food and synthesis.
Common applications
- Metal treatment (pickling, passivation, cleaning)
- pH adjustment and neutralisation
- Fertiliser and chemical manufacturing
- Laboratory reagents and analysis
Grades and concentration
Acids are supplied in technical grade for industry and ACS/reagent grade for analytical work. Concentration (e.g. HCl 37%, sulfuric 95–98%) and grade both matter — check the product page and request a COA.
Safe handling
Concentrated acids are corrosive and cause severe burns. Always add acid to water (never water to acid), wear PPE, and store away from bases and incompatible materials. An SDS is provided on request.
